This city of Etruscan origin was built on three hills in the heart of Tuscany. Siena is also notorious for its Palio which takes place twice a year; once on July 2nd to commemorate the miracles of the Madonna of Provenzano and again on August 16th to honor the Assumption of the Virgin.

The Palio is a traditional competition bringing back to life the colour of the past where 17 "burroughs" , dressed in medieval costumes battle for the title.
Each burrough has a name, a banner, and represents a church of its own.

The woods are thick and the vegetation ranges from the Mediterranean scrub – pine trees, junipers, English oaks, strawberry trees – to the typical Appennine vegetation with turkey oaks, hornbeam, ashes, chestnuts.
