Bagno Vignoni
A dip in the Middle Ages
In the province of Siena you can enjoy exceptional views and in the Val d'Orcia focus some of the most beautiful ones. This valley hosts a rich variety of stunning views; picturesque landscapes, some of the finest vineyards in the world, medieval villages and splendid austere monasteries create a perfect alchemy. In this context of rare beauty deserves a special mention Bagno Vignoni, an old and tiny medieval village. Around the pool there is a miniature village, with its small church, some houses, shops and hotels.
The peculiarity of this village is the lack of a central square, which was replaced by a huge tub in the 16th century, fed directly from the termal source - making Bagno Vignoni a very special place.
In the evening the steaming water of the pool creates a sort of haze that makes the atmosphere amazing, made even more special by the live Jazz and Blues music often payed at local restaurant's outdoors gazebos.
Just next to the porch forms the spillway of the tank, which brings the spa water to the escarpment overlooking the village. The channel, initially buried, comes to the surface once it leaves the village. Near the escarpment consisting entirely of travertine (which is actually formed by the deposit left by the thermal water while cooling) we encounter two large ponds which were used to feed the four mills, built by exploiting the long slope and the characteristics slope.
Due to the size of the ponds, the mills could grind grain for the whole day, while at night the spillway was closed to refill the reservoirs.
The mills were built at different heights, arranged in series in this way were supplied from the same water, maximizing the results.

The whole complex was abandoned in the fifties, and only lately the town has decided to recoup a part with European funds, creating the "Parco dei Mulini". The entire complex can be visited through a narrow path that connects the village of Bagno Vignoni the basin, passing by all the mills.
